RESUMO Valendo-nos de pressupostos pós-estruturalistas e dos letramentos queer, em especial da pedagogia da pergunta proposta por Nelson (1999), nosso objetivo, neste artigo, é mostrar como repertórios sobre diversas esferas da vida social podem ser abordados democraticamente na educação linguística, propiciando a mobilização de significados plurais e contraditórios, bem como a articulação de resistências democráticas em sala de aula. Para tanto, revisitamos repertórios e performances de gênero e sexualidade discutidos na dissertação de mestrado de Hoelzle (2016), fazendo uma reentextualização do material empírico gerado pela autora e uma discussão em que defendemos a pedagogia da pergunta, que é habilmente desenvolvida por ela, embora esse não seja um construto praxiológico da sua pesquisa. A escolha desses dois temas de discussão, gênero e sexualidade, é providencial no contexto brasileiro, já que ambos atravessam uma parte considerável dos repertórios mobilizados e das medidas tomadas pelo atual governo para restringir a construção de sentidos críticos nos contextos educacionais. Nos seis eventos comunicativos, a pedagogia da pergunta é sempre marcada pelo conflito, advindo de diferentes historicidades e performances socioidentitárias das pessoas envolvidas nos eventos comunicativos. Assim, concluímos argumentando que, pelo fato de a linguagem permitir a produção de significados múltiplos e alternativos sobre a vida social, não podemos deixar de construir, nos contextos de educação linguística, sentidos que possibilitem a construção de enquadres mais democráticos. Essa construção é nosso “gosto de sol” que resiste na boca da noite.

ABSTRACT Drawing on assumptions from post-structuralism and queer literacies, especially the “pedagogy of inquiry” proposed by Nelson (1999), our aim, in this article, is to show how repertoires about different spheres of social life can be approached democratically in language education, allowing the mobilization of plural and contradictory meanings, as well as the articulation of democratic resistances in the classroom. To this end, we revisit repertoires and performances of gender and sexuality discussed in Hoelzle’s master’s dissertation (2016), reentextualizing the empirical material generated by the author and making a discussion in which we defend the pedagogy of inquiry, which is very well constructed by her, although this is not a praxiological construct of her study. The choice of the two topics for discussion, gender and sexuality, is providential in the Brazilian context, since both of them cross a considerable part of repertoires mobilized and measures taken by the current government to restrict the construction of critical meanings in educational contexts. In the six communicative events, the pedagogy of inquiry is always marked by conflict, arising from different historicities and socio-identity performances of the people involved in the communicative events. Thus, we conclude by arguing that, because language allows the production of multiple and alternative meanings about social life, we cannot fail to build, in the contexts of linguistic education, meanings that enable the construction of more democratic frames. This construction is our “ray of sun” that resists as night falls.

RESUMO Neste artigo, discutimos os desafios da formação docente para o século XXI, assumindo a decolonialidade como possibilidade de ressignificação de nossa práxis. Um dos desafios do pensamento decolonial é problematizar a colonialidade do saber (LANDER, 2005), que se estabelece por meio do privilégio do conhecimento científico e da invisibilização de outras formas de conhecer. A esse respeito, Castro-Gomez (2007) afirma que a universidade é uma instituição que contribui significativamente para a manutenção dessa ordem. Como professoras universitárias envolvidas diretamente com a formação de professoras/es de línguas, temos buscado diferentes formas de desenvolver nossa práxis como um projeto decolonial (WALSH, 2013). Neste artigo, discutimos a decolonialidade e apresentamos três práxis em que nosso objetivo foi tentar viver a formação de professoras/es de línguas de outro modo.

ABSTRACT In this article, we discuss the challenges of teacher education for the 21stCentury, taking decoloniality as a possible way to resignify our praxis. One of the challenges in decolonial thinking is to problematize the coloniality of knowledge (LANDER, 2005), which is established through the privilege of scientific knowledge and the invisibilization of other forms of knowing. In this respect, Castro-Gomez (2007) affirms that the university is an institution that contributes significantly to the maintenance of this logic. As university teachers directly involved in language teacher education, we have sought different ways to develop our praxis as a decolonial project (WALSH, 2013). In this article, we discuss decoloniality and present three praxes in which our objective was attempting to live language teacher education otherwise.

RESUMO Nosso objetivo é discutir perspectivas decoloniais e, principalmente, pós-humanistas, conforme nos engajamos em um diálogo interepistêmico, que engloba discussões sobre a matéria e a língua/linguagem. Em um primeiro momento, abordamos pensamentos indígenas de forma a relacioná-los com visões de mundo decoloniais e pós-humanistas, brevemente focando em alguns argumentos concernentes a essa relação e justificamos nossas escolhas. Partimos de críticas das ideias coloniais e humanistas sobre os seres humanos, os/as outros/as não-humanos/as e sobre a matéria, e então discutimos concepções tradicionais de língua. A partir de um quadro pós-humanista, abordamos entendimentos sobre língua/linguagem que diretamente se entrelaçam com a materialidade. Com base nas problematizações que apresentamos, nossa intenção é ampliar a compreensão do que significa ser humano/a e percepções de língua/linguagem, ao passo que nos envolvemos em um projeto que busca enxergar e ir além da arrogância humana. Portanto, encorajamos uma revisão onto-epistemológica da língua, com base em seu emaranhamento com a matéria.

ABSTRACT Our objective is to discuss decolonial and, mainly, posthumanist perspectives, as we engage in an inter-epistemic dialogue, which encompasses discussions on matter and language. At first, we address Indigenous thoughts in order to relate them to decolonial and posthumanist worldviews, briefly concentrating our attention on some arguments concerning their relation, and we justify our choices. We draw on critiques of colonial and humanist ideas about humans, nonhuman others and matter, and we then discuss traditional conceptions of language. From a posthumanist framework, we approach understandings of language that directly intertwine it with materiality. Based on the problematizations we present, our aim is to expand understandings of what it means to be human and perceptions of language, as we become involved in a project that seeks to see and go beyond human hubris. Therefore, we encourage an onto-epistemological review of language, based on its entanglement with matter.

RESUMO Relatos decoloniais de um licenciando nos motivaram a problematizar discursos sobre o “despreparo para ensinar línguas na escola”, recorrentes na área de formação docente no Brasil, e a cotejá-los com os relatos de outras/os licenciandas/os e de estudiosas/os da linguística aplicada, do pós-estruturalismo e do pensamento decolonial. Neste estudo interpretativista, as discussões dos temas língua, sujeito e ensino, advindos do material empírico, nos direcionaram a uma perspectiva de formação como um “projeto impossível, porém necessário” (LOPES; BORGES, 2015), e à necessidade de formar professoras/es de línguas para “conversar” (SKLIAR, 2006), haja vista a grande complexidade dos contextos de atuação docente.

ABSTRACT The decolonial accounts made by a student teacher motivated us to problematize discourses about the “unpreparedness to teach languages at schools”, recurrent in the area of language teacher education in Brazil, and confront them with accounts of other student teachers and of applied linguistics, poststructuralist and decolonial scholars. In this interpretive study, discussions on the themes language, the subject and teaching, coming from the empirical material, led us to a perspective of teacher education as an “impossible but necessary project” (LOPES; BORGES, 2015) and to the need to educate language teachers “to talk” (SKLIAR, 2006), in view of the great complexity of teaching contexts.

Abstract This qualitative research was done in a class of English Oral Practice 2 in an undergraduate English teacher education course in Brazil. Grounded on the conception of language as social practice, the first author of this article developed a problematizing pedagogy focusing on race/racism and language as space of power. Resorting to class activities (a question in a written test, an oral test, and a feedback session) and the professor’s diary, we analyzed the students’ accounts about the subject and the meanings they constructed about language. Their accounts indicate that, when evaluating the subject, most of them highlighted the relevance of content, showing that they started conceptualizing language beyond form. Their accounts also suggest they were not using language, but making it.

RESUMO Uma das iniciativas governamentais brasileiras para aprimorar a educação básica foi criar a Rede Nacional de Formação Continuada dos Profissionais do Magistério da Educação Básica Pública em 2011. Nosso curso de extensão nessa rede foi implementado em 2013 em 10 cidades do estado de Goiás e contou com 21 professoras/es formadoras/es e 110 professoras/es participantes. Parte do material empírico de uma/um dessas/es professoras/es formadoras/es será analisado neste artigo focalizando os discursos de sete professoras participantes sobre suas experiências prévias de formação docente e sobre os dois primeiros meses do curso de extensão. A discussão qualitativa se fundamenta em teorizações da Análise de Discurso Crítica e da Formação Docente no Brasil e evidencia que discursos sobre formação de professoras/es de línguas, ensino de língua inglesa e inglês foram problematizados.

ABSTRACT One of the Brazilian government initiatives to improve basic education was to create the National Network of Continuing Education for Teaching Professionals of Public Basic Education in 2011. Our extension program in this network was implemented in 2013 in 10 towns of the state of Goiás and counted on 21 teacher educators and 110 teacher-participants. Part of the empirical material of one of these teacher educators will be analyzed in this article, focusing on the discourses of seven female teacher-participants about their previous language teacher education experiences and about the first two months of the extension course. The qualitative discussion draws on theorizations from Critical Discourse Analysis and Teacher Education in Brazil, and shows that discourses on language teacher education, English teaching, and English were problematized.

RESUMO Com o objetivo de discutir que o ensino de línguas é palco de política linguística (RAJAGOPALAN, 2011), começamos este artigo ressaltando que políticas linguísticas e educacionais são discursos e textos produzidos por múltiplas fontes e resultantes de muitas disputas (LOPES, 2006). Exemplificamos dois desses campos em disputa nos valendo do mais recente texto legal da Educação Básica, a Base Nacional Comum Curricular. O primeiro campo se refere ao estabelecimento da língua inglesa como componente curricular obrigatório da área de Linguagens nos Anos Finais do Ensino Fundamental, e o segundo, à supressão dos termos gênero e orientação sexual do documento. Argumentamos também que as políticas influenciam, mas não determinam o que acontece nas práticas escolares (LOPES, 2006) e recorremos a Biesta (2015) para salientar que, em última instância, cabe às/aos professoras/es as decisões sobre os três propósitos educacionais - qualificação, socialização e subjetificação -, pelo fato de lidarem constantemente com situações novas que exigem julgamento contextual. Em seguida, evidenciamos que o enfoque do nosso grupo de pesquisa tem sido nos domínios subjetificação e socialização e que temos nos fundamentado em teorizações da Linguística Aplicada Crítica, da Pedagogia Queer e do Pensamento Decolonial. Por fim, apresentamos um breve recorte desse nosso trabalho, retirado de uma pesquisa de mestrado, cujo contexto foi uma sala de aula de língua inglesa de uma escola pública de Goiânia (HOELZLE, 2016). Esse recorte, em que identidades de gênero são problematizadas, evidencia que, ao privilegiar a subjetificação e a socialização, não estamos fortalecendo o inglês, mas sim as pessoas que usam essa língua.

ABSTRACT In order to discuss language teaching as a stage of language politics (RAJAGOPALAN, 2011), we begin this article by pointing out that linguistic and educational policies are discourses and texts produced by multiple sources and resulting from many disputes (LOPES, 2006). We exemplify two of these disputed fields using the most recent legal text of Basic Education, a Base Nacional Comum Curricular (National Curricular Common Base). The first field refers to the establishment of the English language as a compulsory curricular component of the area of Languages in the final years of Ensino Fundamental (Elementary Education), and the second refers to the deletion of the terms gender and sexual orientation of the document. We also argue that policies influence, but do not determine what happens in school practices (LOPES, 2006) and we resort to Biesta (2015) to point out that, ultimately, it is up to teachers to make decisions about the three educational purposes - qualification, socialization and subjectification - as they constantly deal with new situations that require contextual judgment. Next, we highlight that the focus of our research group has been on subjectification and socialization and that we have drawn on theorizations of Critical Applied Linguistics, Queer Pedagogy and Decolonial Thinking. Finally, we present a brief discussion of our work, taken from a Master’s study, the context of which was an English-language classroom of a public school in Goiânia (HOELZLE, 2016). This discussion, in which gender identities are problematized, shows that, by privileging subjectification and socialization, we are not promoting English, but rather the people who use that language.

Resumo: Em 2014, a primeira autora deste artigo ministrou uma disciplina de Prática Oral 2 de Inglês no curso de Letras da Universidade Federal de Goiás, fundamentada na Linguística Aplicada Crítica. O curso focalizou os temas "raça" e "língua", objetivando problematizar desigualdades sociais e língua como espaço de poder. Essa problematização foi possível não apenas pelos textos lidos, mas também por eventos críticos que aconteceram entre alunas/os e a professora durante o curso. Esses eventos motivaram o relato de outros eventos críticos, vividos pelas/os alunas/os, que aconteceram antes do curso. Neste estudo, analisamos esse conjunto de eventos como compreendendo atos de fala ofensivos que foram atenuados e rearticulados afirmativamente, abrindo a possibilidade de agência (BUTLER, 1997).

Abstract: In 2014, the first author of this article taught English Oral Practice 2 in the English Teacher Education Program (Letras) atUniversidade Federal de Goiás, grounded on Critical Applied Linguistics. The course focused on the themes of "race" and "language", aimed at problematizing social inequalities and language as a space of power. This problematization was possible not only because of the texts read, but also because of critical events that happened between students and the professor during the course. These events motivated the report of other critical events, experienced by the students, which occurred before the course. In this study, we analyzed this set of events as comprising offensive speech acts which were alleviated and rearticulated affirmatively, opening the possibility of agency (BUTLER, 1997).

RESUMONeste texto, procuramos estabelecer um diálogo entre fundamentos bakhtinianos e formação crítica de professores/as de línguas, especialmente a respeito do conceito de ética. Para tanto, analisamos as práticas discursivas de três professoras-licenciandas da disciplina Estágio Supervisionado de Língua Inglesa I, de um curso de Letras Português/Inglês, sobre o trabalho desenvolvido com o filme Além da sala de aula. O estudo aponta para a relevância do referencial teórico bakhtiniano sobre ética para a formação crítica docente, uma vez entendido que o/a professor/a em formação universitária precisa problematizar suas próprias concepções, perceber a responsabilidade de seus atos e assumir seu papel de agente.

ABSTRACTIn this paper, we aim to establish a dialogue between Bakhtinian foundations and critical language teacher education, mainly regarding the concept of ethics. We analyse the discursive practices of three language student-teachers about the work developed with the film Beyond the Blackboard during their English Practicum I lessons. The study indicates the relevance of Bakhtin’s theoretical framework on ethics for the area of Critical Language Teacher Education, especially because it is understood that the student-teacher needs to problematize his/her own concepts, perceive the responsibility of his/her actions, and take his/her role as an agent for change.

Este texto é uma tentativa de mostrar como o nosso grupo de pesquisa tem colocado em prática uma abordagem crítica no ensino de inglês. Começamos esse trabalho em 2005 e desde então temos refletido colaborativamente sobre ele, a fim de compreender melhor o que fazemos e quem somos como indivíduos e professoras/es de inglês neste mundo de possibilidades. Dois aspectos que se destacam nos estudos que temos feito são o engajamento pedagógico e o identitário das/os professoras/es envolvidas/os. Esses dois tipos de engajamento serão mostrados aqui por meio da discussão do Trabalho de Final de Curso (Letras - Licenciatura em Inglês) de Andrade (2011), que focalizou o tema raça/racismo.

This paper is an attempt to show how our research group has been putting into practice a critical approach to the teaching of English. We started this work in 2005 and since then we have been reflecting collaboratively on it in order to better comprehend what we do and who we are as individuals and language teachers in this world of possibilities. Two aspects that stand out in the studies we have done are the teachers’ pedagogical and identity engagement. These two types of engagement will be shown here by means of a discussion on Andrade’s (2011) Letras (Licenciatura em Inglês) final paper, which focused on the theme race/racism.

Este trabalho analisa narrativas sobre o contexto e as razões de desistência do estudo do inglês como língua estrangeira, especificamente entre estudantes e professoras/es da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade Federal de Goiás. O objetivo é compreender os significados culturais e as práticas identitárias das/os participantes em relação ao papel hegemônico do inglês como língua estrangeira no Brasil. Os resultados mostram que a desistência ocorreu em diferentes contextos educacionais e que a dificuldade com a língua inglesa é vista como limitação individual, reforçando a noção de aprendizado focado no indivíduo, nesses casos narrados como fracassados. Há ainda identificações antagônicas e aparentemente contraditórias sobre a construção da língua inglesa no mundo hoje. A partir da noção de habitus, aponta-se que as narrativas sobre o inglês legitimam o lugar de autoridade dessa língua.

This paper analyses narratives of students and teachers from the Faculdade de Letras at the Universidade Federal de Goiás concerning the time and the reasons why they gave up studying English as a foreign language. It is aimed at understanding the college cultural meanings and identity practices with respect to the hegemonic role of English as a foreign language in Brazil. The research shows that the participants gave up studying English in different educational contexts and that the difficulty with English is seen as an individual limitation, reinforcing the notion of learning focused on the individual, in this case narrated as unsuccessful. Besides, it indicates that they disapprove of English and produce apparently contradictory narratives about the English language construction in the world today. Based on the notion of habitus, it is claimed that the narratives about English legitimize the place of authority of this language.

Este estudo objetivou problematizar o estágio supervisionado por meio da identificação de teorias pessoais de quatro professores em formação universitária sobre o ensino de inglês na escola pública. Além disso, procurou-se identificar mudanças em suas teorias pessoais após o estágio supervisionado e o que as deflagraram. Para tanto, utilizaram-se duas entrevistas semiestruturadas e um questionário. Os quatro participantes cursavam o quinto e último ano de Letras na Universidade Federal em Goiás e realizaram o estágio supervisionado na escola pública federal CEPAE/UFG. Os resultados apontaram que os participantes acreditam na eficácia do ensino inglês na escola pública e que o estágio supervisionado realizado em um contexto considerado quase ideal influiu no modo como eles perceberam o ensino de inglês na escola pública.

This study aimed at problematizing practicum by means of identifying personal theories of four preservice English teachers about teaching English in public schools. Besides, it was intended to identify changes in their personal theories and what triggered them. Two semi-structured interviews and a questionnaire were used to collect data. The participants were in the fifth and last year of a teacher education course at the Universidade Federal of Goiás and the practicum was conducted in a federal school called CEPAE/UFG. The results showed that the participants believe that it is possible to teach English successfully in public schools. They also show that the practicum, which was conducted in a context considered almost ideal, influenced the trainees' perceptions about teaching in public schools.

Há provavelmente tanto razões a favor quanto contra a utilização do livro didático no ensino de língua estrangeira, mas o fato é que, no Brasil, poucos são os contextos educacionais em que não se adota um livro didático. A relação entre essa ampla adoção do livro didático e os modelos tradicionais de formação profissional, nos quais os professores aprendem a aplicar em suas práticas pedagógicas teorias produzidas por agentes externos, parece bastante óbvia. No entanto, nos modelos atuais de formação, que objetivam principalmente que os professores construam conhecimento sobre ensino e aprendizagem, será que há espaço para o livro didático ou deveria o professor criar os seus próprios materiais? Neste texto, abordaremos esse tópico, levando em consideração a percepção de alunos do curso de graduação em Letras da UFG sobre a utilização do livro didático no ensino de inglês.

There may be as many reasons in favour of the use of commercial textbooks in foreign language teaching as against it, but in Brazil there are few contexts in which a textbook is not used. The relationship between this broad adoption of textbooks and the traditional models of teacher education - in which teachers learn how to apply, in their teaching practice, theories developed by researchers - is rather obvious. However, in recent models of teacher education, which aim for teachers to build knowledge about teaching and learning, is there room for textbooks or should teachers develop their own material? In this text, this topic will be dealt with, taking into consideration the perception of undergraduate students of Letras (UFG) about the use of textbooks in English teaching.

Partindo do pressuposto de que mudanças são mais prováveis de acontecer quando não impostas aos professores, mas, sim, desenvolvidas por eles, convidamos três professoras de inglês para participar de um estudo no qual elas teriam oportunidade de refletir colaborativamente sobre as suas práticas pedagógicas. Com base nessas reflexões, foram definidos tópicos para a realização de leituras teóricas, as quais também foram objetos de reflexão. Os resultados mostraram que as experiências que pertencem ao domínio da prática foram mais relevantes do que a teoria para fomentar a mudança das professoras, e as mudanças parecem ter acontecido tanto comportamental quanto cognitivamente. Além disso, as mais experientes realizaram mais mudanças "reflexivas" do que "técnicas", confirmando que professores menos experientes estão mais preocupados com os aspectos técnicos do ensino, ao passo que os mais experientes ou reflexivos focalizam mais as consequências de suas ações para os alunos.

Based on the assumption that change is more likely to happen if it is not imposed upon teachers, but rather developed by them, we invited three English teachers to take part in a study in which they would have the opportunity to reflect collaboratively upon their teaching. Based on these reflections, some themes were defined for theoretical readings, which also became objects of reflection. The analysis of the eight reflective sessions and the final interview allowed us to detect eight sources of declared changes. The results showed that experiences which belong to the realm of practice are more relevant than theory to foster teacher change and that changes seem to have happened both cognitively and behaviorally. In addition, the more experienced teachers performed changes that were more "reflective" than "technical", confirming that less experienced teachers are more worried about the technicalities of teaching while more experienced or reflective teachers are more concerned with the consequences of what they do to students.

Este estudo tem como objetivo investigar as reflexões conduzidas por professores de inglês da escola pública sobre sua prática pedagógica e suas conseqüências para os alunos. Os resultados mostraram que os temas principais da reflexão instrução, conteúdo, objetivos, resultados, contexto, professor e alunos. O foco deste trabalho será nas teorias práticas sobre conteúdo e objetos, que não foram simplesmente desvendados mas, printipalmente, questionados e transformados.

This study aimed at investigating the reflections of public school English teachers about their pedagogical practice and its consequences for the students. The results showed that the main themes of reflection were instruction, content, aims, results, context, teacher, and students. The focus of this paper will be on the practical theories about content and aims, which were not simply revealed, but also questioned and transformed.
